In 1833, Ann Thompson drowned near Boulogne on the way to Botany Bay. She was being transported from the Isle of Man for stealing 37 yards of lace edging. In Drogh Vraane I have written a song cycle imagining what it might have been like as a poor young woman, to be exposed to the temptations of town after living a harsh rural existence. https://on.soundcloud.com/T9ccCndnjJuuL6vNeL (rough audio notes)
The songs include warnings from the pulpit, inspired by real 19th century sermons, defiant feminist anthems and a rhythmic interpretation of the traditional Deemsters' oath.....
